Premier Cru
Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu

Meursault · 35.10 ares · First vintage 1989
A quirk of appellation law sits at the heart of this wine. Les Santenots lies within the commune of Meursault, but red wine made there carries the Volnay premier cru appellation while white from the same ground is sold as Meursault. Santenots du Milieu is the heart of the group and the best drained of its sections, on the Volnay boundary, on red iron-rich clay-limestone. The iron gives a wine closer in weight and tannic structure to Pommard than to Volnay, and it is the most reserved of the domaine's Côte de Beaune cuvées. Hail has repeatedly cut production here, in some years to a single barrel.
